Hey there, language learners! Let also say future language learners! Are you thinking about starting an exciting adventure into the world of English/Spanish learning? Well, I must tell you, you’re not alone. As an experienced educator in the area, I’ve had the pleasure to help and guide students of all ages through their language learning pursuits. But let’s be real! Learning a new language can be extremely scary and daunting at times, right? That’s why I’ve decided to write this blog especially for you who are now facing the challenge of learning a second language.
Is it easy?
I know it is not easy, by the way! Do you remember this saying? “It is easier said than done”, well I’m not going to tell you it’s easy because I was also out there with the same fear which used to make me feel like running away and never stop.
Embark On this fearless language journey
Listen! If you’re reading my blog now, I must tell you that it’s time to grab your favorite mug of tea or coffee or perhaps the one I gave you when you signed up for my course, then find yourself a peaceful spot and let’s embark on this fearless language journey together.
I must confess it’s sometimes overwhelming
For some reasons, the phrase “learning a language” to be more precise, can be intimidating for so many people generally when the reasons you’re learning it stand out to be apprehensive”, What do I mean by that?
Reasons behind signing up for a language course
Whatever your reasons may be, there are two types of motivation behind learning a language: Intrinsic and extrinsic; Have you ever heard of these terms before?
Intrinsic motivation:
Intrinsic motivation is like doing something just because it feels great or interesting to you. When it comes to learning language, intrinsic motivation means diving into it because you genuinely enjoy the language itself or because you’re curious about it.
Example:
Imagine you’re someone who loves listening to music or reading English books just because you enjoy them. That’s intrinsic motivation, you’re doing it because it makes you happy to understand and communicate in English.
Or maybe you’re the kind of person who are interested in knowing about different cultures and languages. Learning English can be a fun journey of discovery, a way to connect with people from around the world and understand their stories better.
Extrinsic motivation:
Extrinsic motivation on the other hand, is like having a little extra push from outside yourself. It’s when you’re learning a language because you want something specific, like a reward or to avoid a consequence. And sometimes, it’s because you find yourself under the obligation to do so.
Example:
Let’s say you’re learning English because you want to get a great job or get a raise. That’s extrinsic motivation in which English proficiency opens doors to better career opportunities.
Another example I would illustrate could be studying English to pass an exam needed for university admission.
You’re not just doing it for fun; you have a clear goal in mind, like getting into your dream school. This is where the downside of learning language comes to play. You obviously find yourself in the situation that you need to pass your English course to be able to graduate from school or college.

The reasons why I have decided to become an English Speaker
First, If I’m here talking about my experience today is because of my dad who tirelessly used to tell me to sign up for an English course which I neglected until one day I would meet with some of my cousins who for the first time went to visit us back home. I never forget that week when all of them were only talking in English and my brother and I could understand not even a word.

I was 18 years old
I remember I was 18 years old, and it was when I realized that my dad was right. Of course, I decided to learn English because I wanted to be able to communicate with my cousins in case they visited us again from the US. This is also an example of intrinsic motivation which along the road became extrinsic when I first applied for a job in Ecuador as an English teacher. In that case, the headmaster decided to hire me under the condition to become a licensed teacher while working for him. Wow! Guess what?
I made up my mind
I had to decide to continue my career studying English to become a licensed teacher. Let’s be honest, have I experienced any fear along the road? Of course, yes! Because I found myself studying the language again under the condition to graduate and bring a degree to the principal, otherwise; my job would be in jeopardy and back then, no one wanted such a thing.
Understanding the Fear of Learning English
The fear of learning English often derive from a multitude of sources, each unique to the individual learner. For some, it’s the daunting prospect of mastering the skill of being able to communicate, understand and pronounce words better. Others may feel overwhelmed by the amount of vocabulary and complex grammar rules.
How did I get there?
I’d like to illustrate one of my experiences when I started learning English. I remember clearly when I signed up for my English course, on my first day of class, I met one of my neighbors at the language center who also was studying English, that was in 2004, when he saw me, he suddenly began to talk to me in English as if I’ve already known enough to hold a conversation…. All I felt that day was to run away and never stop, He was talking to me none stop, and all I could answer was yes, yes, yes; no matter what he was saying, my answers remained and stayed yes, oh my gosh! What an embarrassing moment! That was when my fear started to come over, and every time I would come across him my intention was either to make a detour or run away.
Let me tell you, I was in that situation for a while until one day he told me to come over to his place any time I wanted to practice. Well, I had to find a way to overcome my fears. I’m telling you, those fears can manifest as anxiety, self-doubt, or even a reluctance to engage in language learning activities. Well, it’s important to acknowledge that I had to swallow my pride and decided to accept his offer. I had to accept my reality and address these fears to get what I wanted.
Staying Motivated Among Challenges
In the face of these fears, maintaining motivation can be an endless task. however, it’s precisely during these moments of doubt that our determination to succeed is put to the test. Picture my situation when that guy started talking to me in front of everybody when I had no idea what he was saying. Despite my initial reservations about learning English, I found inspiration in my favorite English-language songs and movies, reminding myself of the endless opportunities that fluency in English can unlock.

Strategies to Overcome Language Learning Fears
So, how do we conquer these fears and emerge stronger on the other side? One effective strategy is to embrace a growth mindset, viewing mistakes as valuable learning opportunities rather than setbacks. I remember one of my teachers once said, don’t be afraid to make mistakes because you always learn from them, true facts. Bear in mind that if you want to do good in your learning process you have to practice, and there are tons of ways to do so, I have a short list here for you base on my experience.
- Never be afraid of making mistakes.
- Think in the target language continuously.
- Do research.
- Read in the target language.
- Say things out loud and keep repeating words that are hard for you to pronounce.
- If you like to take notes in class, make sure you review them from time to time.
- Listen to music in the target language.
- Watch shows or movies in the target language.
- Try to talk to native speakers because they will never judge you neither laugh at you when you say something wrong.
- Do not care about what people say or think about you.
Embracing the Journey Towards Fearless English Mastery
As we reach the end of our exploration into the scope of language learning fears, it’s important to reflect on the transformative power of resilience and determination. Learning English, like any journey is worth embarking upon. Yet, it is within these moments of fear and doubt that our true strength and potential are revealed.
Do you remember my situation when I had to hide every time I ran across my neighbor because he would talk to me in English, and I would not be able to answer? I profoundly believe everyone faces their own unique struggles; however, perseverance and determination are the key. Never let go and fight for what you want no matter what the circumstance is. Let me tell you once and for all, you’ve got this, if I did it you can do it too.
Cheers to your journey towards English mastery, it’s going to be an unforgettable ride!
